In addition to the overall Master of Science in Public Health degree competencies, Maternal & Child Health MSPH graduates will be able to:

  1. Identify the scientific underpinnings and strength of evidence from the literature for addressing MCH issues including: morbidity and mortality; individual, family, social and community factors; and health system characteristics;
  2. Describe the scope and impact of MCH problems for children, women and families;
  3. Describe MCH history, policy development, major programs, laws, regulations, advocacy movements and current legislative mandates; and
  4. Summarize data on a policy, write policy statements, and translate policies into organization.

 Research Skills

  1. Conduct needs assessments focused on health behavior change and the social impact of planned health programs;
  2. Use qualitative and quantitative research methods for studying the impact of psychological, interpersonal, social structural, cultural and biological factors in the etiology and social consequences of public health problems;
  3. Carry out, with faculty supervision, all phases of the research process, including project design, proposal development, data collection, data analysis, and interpretation and writing up of results; and
  4. Use ethical principles guiding the conduct of research on human subjects.
