Hello and welcome to the Sitecore Self-Guided Training! The goal of this self-lead training is to familiarize Authors and Contributors with the Sitecore CMS (Content Management System) and its components to manage webpage content. Following the self-lead training exercises, along with the Sitecore User Guides, you will learn how to:
Identify components
Edit content within a component

Welcome to the first page of training! (Don’t worry, there’s only one page after this one.) These exercise pages are a way for you to not only learn how to use the components our team has built into Sitecore but also, show us that you understand how they work and are ready to edit the content representing your part of the university to anyone in the world. This is all open book so keep the Sitecore User Guides open in a separate browser tab or window to help you as you work. You can also practice any of the exercises, or just play around, on the separate Sandbox page created for you within Sitecore. Finally, take advantage of the links labeled “Documentation” that we have placed along the exercises. Those links will take you directly to the place in the Sitecore User Guides that explain the component in more detail. This first set of exercises focuses on teaching you how to edit content on a page. Let’s go! Part 1 - EditingRich Text Editor (RTE)Let’s begin with one of the most common tasks: editing text that is already on the page. The first component on the page is the Rich Text Editor. It allows you to enter text and links in a variety of single and multi-column layouts. The content in this RTE has an outdated title and a paragraph that needs updating.
Media FloatNow that the Rich Text Editor has been updated, we will move down the page to the next component. Media Float allows you to add images, videos, or a combination of both next to a title and paragraph of text. Media Float also has many of the exact same content fields as the Rich text Editor and they are edited in the exact same way you just experienced. Let’s edit some of the content fields that are unique to the Media Float component.
Part 2 - Component OptionsMany components have options that enable you to make adjustments across the whole component. The options available will depend on the component and number of sections added. Let’s change the options on the same Media Float component we have been working with. Media Float
Part 3 - Sort ItemsComponents with multiple sections give you the control to change the order of those sections with the Sort Items function. Graduation is the last part of the student journey so let’s move it to the bottom of the the same Media Float component we have been working with. Media Float

Congratulations on making it to the second, and final, page of the training! The previous exercises were focused on the most common tasks of editing existing content inside of the components and changing their options. In the next exercises, we will focus out to the sections within the component and then the components themselves. Part 1 - Delete Content Inside of a ComponentYou have edited sections of content in the previous exercises but what about deleting sections of content. The benefit of managing your content by component sections is the ability to easily delete unwanted sections without touching the sections you need to keep. Let’s do this in a familiar component, the Rich Text Editor. Rich Text Editor (RTE)
Part 2 - Add Content Inside of a ComponentYou have learned the benefits of managing and deleting content by sections within the components but what about adding a new section? Adding a new section of content into a component is not only easy, but the components will frequently aid you in maintaining the legibility of the layout. Let’s add a new section to the Media Grid component near the bottom of the page.

Part 3 - Delete a ComponentNow that you’re familiar with deleting and adding sections within components, let’s broaden the scope to the components themselves. Removing components from a page is as easy as deleting a section of content but with a slightly different process to help prevent accidental deletions. Accordion
Part 4 - Add a Component Into an Empty PlaceholderThe containers that Sitecore gives us to add components into a page are called Placeholders. When there are no components in a placeholder, they are visible to us from the Edit view we have been working in. Let’s add a new component into one of these empty placeholders. RSS
Part 5 - Add a Component Into a Full PlaceholderPlaceholders that already have components inside of them do not show themselves on the page but are still just as accessible as empty placeholders. You just have to know what button to press to make them reveal themselves. Let’s add a component into one of these full placeholders. Media Float
Part 6 - Move a ComponentComponents can be reordered within the same placeholder or moved into other placeholders on the page. In this final exercise, let’s move a component of your choice somewhere further up or down the page. Any Component
The End🥳 Congratulations on completing the Sitecore self-guided training exercises! |
