COPH Department: Health Policy and Management 
Concentration: Health Care Organizations & Management (Code: HCO) 
Minimum Credit Hours: 42

The Health Care Organizations and Management program is designed for individuals interested in the management of hospitals, group practices, health departments, and other provider organizations. The program focuses on the structure and management of health care organizations. Students develop knowledge and skills in management science, leadership, and decision-making. The curriculum does not require students to develop all health administration quantitative and analytic skill areas typically required of senior management positions.

 Health Care Organizations & Management Competencies

In addition to the overall Master of Public Health degree competencies, Health Care Organizations and Management graduates will be able to:

  1. Assess the health care system in the United States, including the role of the public health disciplines;
  2. Employ analytic skill in health economics and health policy analysis;
  3. Apply management principles in private and public sector health organizations;
  4. Analyze ethical issues and implications of cultural diversity in health policy and management;
  5. Demonstrate ability to use decision making methodologies, such as information systems, financial management, and quantitative methods;
  6. Develop leadership, interpersonal and communication skills; and
  7. Apply critical thinking skills and knowledge to a management issue in a health care or related organization.

  1. During 2nd semester meet with advisor and begin planning field experience. See http://health.usf.edu/publichealth/academicaffairs/fe/. May be met through the Peace Corps Master’s International option.
  2. Any grade below a C (C- to F) is required to be retaken.  The grade will be included in the student's GPA.
  3. The College Reserves All Rights to Repeal And/or Modify.
  4. Supervised Field Experience
  • Students with little or no professional experience: 3 hours minimum. 
  • Students with relevant professional experience: 1-3 hours minimum.
  • Students with substantial work experience can negotiate a reduced number of hours with their advisor (e.g., 1 or 2 hours) if the student has meaningful experience (involving decision-making) in a health care or related organization
