General Surgery Faculty
Objective
The objective of this course is to help the student understand the scientific basis and general principles of research in the field of General Surgery. This is accomplished with an introduction to the theoretical and practical aspects of conducting experimental and clinical research. Students may participate in an ongoing research project under close supervision by the primary faculty investigator based on availability and prior approval of the investigator. The involvement in research during this course will improve the student's ability to evaluate results published by other investigators and to develop the intellectual tools necessary for initiating research of their own. Students will be expected to read and participate in the research with effort rewarded by co-authorship on data published from their data.
An Independent Study Application MUST have signatures of BOTH the elective faculty preceptor and Surgery Education Coordinator at least one month prior to the start of the elective. This form can be obtained from the Registrar’s office.
