Student-to-Faculty Ratio

According to IPEDS, the student-to-faculty ratio is calculated by dividing the full-time equivalent (FTE) of students by the FTE of instructional staff. The FTE of students is calculated by adding the number of full-time students to one-third of the number of part-time students. Similarly, the FTE of instructional staff is calculated by adding the number of full-time instructional staff to one-third of the number of part-time instructional staff.

It is important to note that both faculty and students in stand-alone graduate or professional programs, such as medicine, law, veterinary, dentistry, social work, business, or public health, are excluded from the calculation. Additionally, undergraduate or graduate student teaching assistants are not counted as faculty.

For the Student / Faculty Ratio, the faculty is counted as Full Time + (1/3 * Part time faculty) + (1/3 * other primary instructional staff).

Here is an example of how the student-to-faculty ratio would be calculated for a hypothetical institution:

  • Full-time students: 10,000

  • Part-time students: 3,000

  • Full-time instructional staff: 500

  • Part-time instructional staff: 300

FTE students = 10,000 + (3,000 / 3) = 11,000 FTE instructional staff = 500 + (300 / 3) = 600 Student-to-faculty ratio = 11,000 / 600 = 18.3

This means that for every 18.3 students, there is one faculty member at this institution.
