Teaching Opportunities

Teaching Opportunities:

    1. Fourth Year Teaching Elective: approximately 60 students per year 4 class teach weekly for 90 hours across the year, educating their junior colleagues in Doctoring 1, 2, or 3. Grants one-month elective credit. Not all students will be selected for this, and selection is guaranteed for students in the Education Scholarly Concentration.
    2. Fourth Year Basic Science Teaching Elective: students work for a month to teach in small groups, labs, and design curriculum for year 1-2 courses. Grants one-month elective credit. Requires instructor approval.
    3. Tutoring Program: MS2-4 students tutor junior students under the direction of Dr. O’Callaghan. Tutoring requires orientation, and tutors must meet specified academic standards.
    4. Teaching in CACLS and CAMLS: our simulation facilities commonly ask for senior students to assist with physical exam or communications teaching and examinations.
    5. Pipeline and other community programs. Shirley Smith (Office of Diversity and Inclusion) and Ellen Kent (ekent@health.usf.edu) from the Area Health Education Center (AHEC) regularly announce opportunities for teaching elementary, secondary, and college students.
    6. MCAT or other private exam tutoring. This is acceptable as long as you are not paid for the 20 hours needed for credit.
    7. Independent teaching opportunities: you may propose a special opportunity to Dr. O’Callaghan. It must be medical or relevant to community health, and separate from teaching needed to meet clerkship or required patient care requirements.
